"Open Your Heart and Your Hand": The Radical Social and Theological Vision of Deuteronomy
Deuteronomy (Devarim) is consistently preoccupied with the well-being of the most vulnerable members of society. A major part of what it means to be God's chosen people, according to Deuteronomy, is to build a society in which God's blessings are widely shared rather than selfishly hoarded. In this session, we'll examine Deuteronomy's understanding of debt cancellation during shemittah (the sabbatical year) and see what these laws tell us about what society ought to look like. And we'll ask: what might these laws teach us about taking Torah seriously today?

Siblings in Bresheit: Power, Identity and Relationship
In this class we will examine some of the most complex sibling dynamics in Breisheit. We will look at sisters and brothers, engaging in a close reading of key biblical texts to see how the content and form of the text offers insights into these dynamic and fraught siblings loves. We will also examine ourselves as readers. How do the same words get refracted differently depending on the lives we've lived and the paths we've walked? Together, in this class, we will emerge with a better understanding of the biblical texts and ourselves as readers. Ultimately, when we better understand ourselves as readers we better understand the differences between us and our most powerful tool for change: re-interpretation of narrative.

Beer and Coffee: The Tale of Two Drinks
The Talmud is extremely strict about non-Jewish wine, prohibiting a Jew from drinking any wine that a non-Jew even touched. But the rules regarding beer are more lenient and coffee was unknown until a much later period. So is non-Jewish beer and coffee totally kosher? In this shiur we will examine not only the rules regarding these beverages but what the flouting of these rules can tell us about the relationships between Jews and non-Jews at several critical points in Jewish history.

The Audacity of Faith
Faith by definition is required at the very moment when we are in doubt, unable to see our way forward. What do we do when in the moments when we most need our faith, we find ourselves at a loss, unable to say, I believe? In this session, we'll turn to the writings of Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Shapira, the Eish Kodesh, writing from the Warsaw Ghetto, for his teachings on faith. We'll ask: what is the nature of faith, what do we do when we find ourselves without it, and on whom or what might we rely in moments of struggle?

The Heroines of Early Judaism
The novellas that Jews in the late Second Temple period produced feature female heroines at the center of their stories. These novellas, which include the stories of Judith, Esther, Susanna, and Aseneth, were extraordinarily popular tales that depicted women as powerful saviors of the Jewish people. Why did Jewish authors at this time feature women at the heart of their stories? What messages were they seeking to convey? This talk will seek to answer these questions by exploring the historical setting of the late Second Temple period and considering the central role that Jewish literature played during this turbulent time.

The Orthodox Women of Instagram: Changing the Landscape of Jewish Family Purity
Jewish laws of family purity (taharat ha-mishpahah), which govern mikvah use and sexual relations, have traditionally been kept private, studied primarily by the Orthodox married couples who practice them, but a group of Instagram influencers are turning the old model on its head. With some of their humorous reels receiving over a million views, they are influencing the way women relate to these laws, their bodies, and their marriages. An Honest Religious Thinker is like a Tightrope Walker: Maimonides and Us
Can Judaism provide us with spiritual and intellectual resources that help us lead flourishing lives of meaning even as we're beset by doubts about the very ideas that might serve as foundations and inspirations: truth, justice, progress, God, even free will? As he so often does, Maimonides has blazed a trail for us here - building a life of incredible energy and productivity on a quicksand-like foundation of doubt. Like his work, which was both humanistic and distinctively Jewish, Maimonides's doubts encompassed both the redeemability of Torah and the very possibility of human life meaning anything. Together, we'll watch Maimonides chart his courageous, dizzying path on the razor's edge of truth and nihilism - and consider what it can mean for us today. All sources will be in English - no prior background required.

Believing What We Say: Four Models of Truthfulness in Prayer
Sometimes, we articulate hopes in our prayers that are hard to believe. We pray for the resurrection of the dead or we bless God for caring compassionately for all living flesh -- but these convictions and hopes can feel unsustainable in the face of doubts and countervailing realities. How important is truthfulness in prayer? And what can we do when sincerity is difficult? Together we will consider four models for navigating truthfulness in prayer.
